What is the best time of year for senior pictures? | High School Senior Photographer Lafayette Indiana

A very common questions I get is “When should we have senior pictures taken?” and “What time of the year is best for senior pictures?”

While I can’t answer this question for other parts of the country, I can give you my answers based on living in Indiana! I am a Lafayette Indiana and surrounding area wedding, family, and senior photographer.

Senior pictures are typically taken the summer before the start of senior year or the fall or spring during senior year.

Here in Indiana senior pictures aren’t usually taken during the cold winter months.

High school senior pictures are a special part of this milestone year.  These senior pictures will be cherished for years to come.  Pictures freeze time!

What time of the year is best for senior pictures?

There are pros and cons to each season and it really depends on what works best for you. Continue reading for great things about each season.

Summer:

  • The summer before senior year can be a really good time for taking senior pictures.

  • Summer schedules are usually more open and flexible.  Once school starts back up students are typically really busy with school, sports/extra curricular activities and jobs.  It can be much harder to find a time to schedule pictures once school starts back up.

  • Summer months are nice with warm weather and the sun stays up late into the evening.

  • The best time of day for pictures is the golden hour: the hour before the sun sets.  Summer golden hours are beautiful and are the cooler part of the day.

Fall:

  • Fall of senior year is a beautiful time for pictures with the warm colors of autumn and the cooler temperatures.  It is the most popular time of year for senior pictures.

  • The temperatures drop and seniors can feel comfortable in a wider range of outfits.   Seniors are much less worried about being hot during the session, but depending on the weather can have some cold sessions.

  • The days are not as long, the sun sets earlier and earlier.  Students are busier and fall is every photographer’s busy season.

  • If you want to have your senior pictures taken during the popular fall season make sure that you book your session early!  Session slots book up quickly.

  • If you play a fall sport we can include pictures with your uniform or equipment.

Spring

  • Spring of senior year is the last chance to get senior pictures before graduating.

  • The weather warms back up, the grass turns green and the flowers start blooming.

  • Flowering trees the end of April make for gorgeous senior pictures

  • The sunshine feels so good on our faces and we can shed our heavy winter clothes.

  • If you play a spring sport we can include pictures in your uniform.

When choosing WHEN to have your senior pictures taken think about what you want to wear, the weather and your school and sports schedule. Each season has pros and cons- it really depends on what will work best for you.

If you want to have your senior pictures taken in the fall make sure to book early! Fall photo session dates book up fast.
